SMOCUM Mustang

Posted in Cars on September 3rd, 2010 by admin

The things we do to capture a photo. I got up at 4am to drive to the beach to attempt a sunrise photoshoot with Rod’s immaculate Ford Mustang. Good for a 10.8-second quarter mile in full street trim you’ll be able to take a closer look at the car in an upcoming issue of Street Fords magazine.

Nikon 35mm F/2 AF-D lens

Posted in Camera talk on August 31st, 2010 by admin

I picked up this prime lens today. She’s a little old school (first released in 1989). With no focus drive it is a little slow in auto-focusing as you would expect (you have to keep your fingers away from the front of the lens as the focus ring physically turns). Manual focus is fine obviously.

Note this lens will not auto focus on an entry level camera (Nikon D40 for example) but will work on a D90 or higher etc. I am surprised Nikon hasn’t released an F1.4 full frame version of this lens considering you can now buy an F1.8 DX version.

Size difference beside a 28-70mm lens – a lot lighter and easier to handle.

Photo examples: these are only a few quick hand held examples.

F2 – Extremely soft wide open.

F2.8 – The lens is far far sharper.

F4 – This is generally the widest I would personally be shooting so I am more interested to see how it goes at this range.

F5 – Upon intial testing the lens is probably at it’s sweetest spot from F3.2-6.3.

Kick-Ass

Posted in TV & movies on August 27th, 2010 by admin

Quite often more than not you witness a movie trailer, they show you the good parts, it looks interesting, you see it and it’s a bit of a letdown. Well Kick-Ass is the complete opposite. None of the theatrical trailers appealed to me but I watched it on recommendation for a few friends and they were right. It struggles to be a serious and light hearted movie at the same time. There’s plenty of serious violence and gore in it but it never seems real and is far from shocking yet I wouldn’t let a youngster watch it.

I had no idea Nicholas Cage was cast before the screening and he plays one of the real hero’s of the movie in Big Daddy. His daughter played by Chloe Moretz is the real star of the flick who portrays the character Hit Girl. Check out the red band trailer below compared to the theatrical trailers and you’ll see just how different 2 movie trailers can be!

Plot

Dave Lizewski is an unnoticed high school student and comic book fan who one day decides to become a super-hero, even though he has no powers, training or meaningful reason to do so.

I’ll admit that the majority of photographs I take are centred around the automotive industry in one way or another so it was nice to take a few different shots recently. I was helping out a friend for an upcoming art exhibition. Taken with a subtle diffused off camera flash, the results were good considering the very quick setup and 15 minute shoot.

A couple of photos from the night.

I photographed Dion’s Ford around 6 months ago for Extreme Performance magazine. The Falcon has an 890hp small bock 400ci sprint car engine that has been good for an 8.86@153mph over the quarter mile. Dion runs his own performance business called Dyno-Mite Performance

Inception

Posted in TV & movies on July 28th, 2010 by admin

Stunning visual effects with a crafty plot, Inception is a very interesting piece of work. It’s certainly worth the price of admission but I found the entire movie to be a touch predictable. Director Christopher Nolan has cast a few members from the Batman crew but one character bares a disturbing resemblance to the late Heath Ledger. You may remember Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tommy Solomon from 3rd Rock from the Sun. Well Joseph is all grown up now and plays the role of Arthur, Leonardo DiCaprio’s right hand man.

Plot

In a world where technology exists to enter the human mind through dream invasion, a highly skilled thief is given a final chance at redemption which involves executing his toughest job till date, Inception.
